Investing in Quality: How Horizon Finishing Transforms the Art of Book Binding

In an era marked by rapid technological advancement, the importance of quality in manufacturing cannot be overstated. The vendors and manufacturers that businesses choose to align with can significantly impact their performance and bottom line. This is particularly true in the book binding and paper folding industry, where precision, durability, and efficiency are paramount. In this article, we delve into the role of quality vendors and manufacturers, focusing on the noteworthy example of Horizon Finishing, a leader in the field that has earned a reputation for its commitment to quality and innovation.

Behind the Scenes at Horizon’s Smart Factory

In 2019, I had the privilege of touring Horizon’s factory in Takashima, Shiga on the western shores of Lake Biwa, Japan. This was part of their celebrated “Smart Factory” event—an expo held in Kyoto where Horizon and several other vendors showcased how seamlessly their finishing equipment integrated with various machines. They even demonstrated robotic arms loading book blocks into a BQ-270V perfect binder—a sight to behold for any tech enthusiast.

The factory itself was a testament to Horizon’s dedication to efficiency and smart manufacturing. From molding their own plastics to bending their own sheet metal, from painting and powder coating to using robotic systems for material transport, every aspect of the operation was designed to optimize output without compromising on quality.

Horizon was in the midst of constructing their new demonstration center during my visit, a project that has since been completed. I eagerly look forward to revisiting the now-finished center. For those interested, the Smart Factory expo is making a return, and Horizon users should definitely consider signing up. Keep an eye on our blog for more information on this upcoming event.

In-House Production: A testament to Quality

One of the distinguishing features of Horizon’s operation is their policy of manufacturing over 70% of mechanical parts in-house. This might seem like a trivial detail to the uninitiated, but it’s a crucial part of what makes Horizon’s products so reliable and efficient.

By keeping the majority of their production in-house, Horizon maintains a tight grip on quality control. They are able to monitor and adjust the manufacturing process as needed, ensuring that every component meets their high standards. Furthermore, this approach allows them to quickly address and rectify any issues that may arise, minimizing delays and maximizing productivity.

But in-house production isn’t just about control; it’s also about innovation. By designing, programming, and assembling their products under one roof, Horizon is able to streamline the process of implementing new ideas and improvements. This translates into more advanced, efficient, and reliable products for their customers, all while maintaining reasonable prices.
